Welcome! The Traditional Dancers of the
Golden State (TDOGS) sponsors the Hayward Contra Dance and provides traditional
American style folk dance in the San Francisco East Bay area of California.
Our regular dance is the fourth Sunday from 4 – 7 pm. Advanced “Zesty”
dances are the fifth Sundays (when there is one), and we occasionally host
special dances on other dates. Our schedule posted on-line at:
http://www.HaywardContraDance.org , and on Facebook search on: Hayward Contra.
For more information, call (650) 691-9663 .
We always dance to live
music. All dances are taught and prompted. A lesson for beginners is offered
thirty minutes before every dance, except Advanced or Zesty dances for
experienced dancers. No dance partner is necessary and it is our custom to
change partners after every dance in the spirit of community dance. Dance either
the "Gent" or "Lady" role.
Contra dance in America has evolved from a
traditional form of folk dance of the British Isles, and has been danced
continuously since the time of the English colonies in New England as a true
community dance. The music is in the form of lively reels or jigs in the Celtic
and bluegrass traditions. Traditional country dance is a precursor of modern
western square dancing, but is unrelated to modern country and western line
dancing. More information about traditional country dancing is at:
